What is an upside down text generator?
An upside down text generator replaces ordinary characters with Unicode symbols that resemble 180-degree-rotated versions, then reverses their order for the classic effect. For example, Hello can become approximately ollǝH.
Nothing in the copied string is physically rotated. The tool borrows characters from phonetic alphabets, mathematics and other scripts because Unicode does not define a dedicated “upside-down English alphabet.”

How does upside-down Unicode text work?
The effect uses two separate operations. First, supported characters are replaced by visual turned counterparts. Second, the sequence is reversed so the line reads in the expected direction after a physical 180-degree rotation.
1. Character substitution
Normal letters become different Unicode characters: a→ɐ, e→ǝ, h→ɥ, r→ɹ, t→ʇ and ?→¿ are common examples.
2. Order reversal
A 180-degree turn swaps left and right as well as top and bottom, so the classic output reverses the character sequence after substitution.
3. Unsupported text passes through
Accented letters, emoji and scripts without a useful mapping remain unchanged rather than being deleted or replaced with random symbols.
Upside down text vs reversed text vs mirror text
These effects are often called “flipped text,” but they are different transformations. Keeping them separate prevents users from getting a backwards result when they actually wanted turned letter shapes.

Upside-down alphabet, numbers and punctuation coverage
The lowercase Latin alphabet has the strongest visual set. Uppercase letters, numbers and punctuation contain more approximations because Unicode was never designed as a complete rotation system.

Accessibility, searchability and compatibility
Upside-down Unicode is primarily decorative. The borrowed symbols can look like English letters to a sighted reader while representing completely different characters to software.
- Search: ǝ is not e and ɥ is not h, so normal search may not match the flipped version.
- Screen readers: assistive technology can announce mathematical or phonetic character names instead of the intended English word.
- Long text: flipped paragraphs are difficult to scan; short phrases produce the best novelty effect.
- URLs, handles and passwords: never replace required ordinary characters with look-alikes in exact-match identifiers.
- Font support: unusual capital and number mappings can appear differently or as missing glyphs on older systems.

Why is classic upside-down text reversed too?
A 180-degree rotation swaps left and right as well as top and bottom. Reversing the sequence makes the line read in the expected order after the rotation.
Is the text actually rotated?
No. Plain Unicode has no general rotate-text property that travels with copied text. The generator substitutes visually similar characters and optionally reverses their order.
What is the difference between Flipped Letters and Classic Upside Down?
Flipped Letters changes supported glyphs but keeps their original positions. Classic Upside Down changes the glyphs and reverses the sequence for the stronger 180-degree illusion.
Why do some letters look imperfect?
Unicode never created a complete upside-down Latin alphabet. The mappings borrow symbols from phonetics, mathematics and other scripts, so several characters are approximations or remain unchanged.
Why are lowercase letters usually better than capitals?
Lowercase English has more convincing turned-looking Unicode characters. Capital mappings are more mixed and often come from unrelated mathematical or script symbols.
Can I flip emoji safely?
Emoji do not have upside-down text equivalents, so they are preserved. When available, the tool uses Intl.Segmenter to reverse grapheme clusters instead of splitting complex emoji sequences into separate code points.
Can I flip multi-line text?
Yes. Flip Each Line transforms every line independently while preserving line order. Classic Upside Down treats the whole input as one sequence and can therefore move the order of lines.
Can upside-down text be restored to normal?
Yes for text produced by this mapping in most cases. Apply the classic flip again in the Restore tool. Other websites can use different look-alikes, so their output may not decode exactly.
Is upside-down text the same as backwards text?
No. Backwards text only reverses character order while keeping normal letter shapes. Upside-down text also substitutes the letter shapes. Use the Backward Text Generator when reversal alone is the goal.
Is upside-down text the same as mirror writing?
No. Mirror writing is a horizontal reflection. Classic upside-down text imitates a 180-degree rotation using turned-looking Unicode plus reversal.
